Intro [01:44]
Guest Introduction: Nikki Oden [02:16]
Nikki Oden is a mom, wife, ex attorney, author of But Definitely Wear Mascara, and podcast host. Nikki shares her story as a commercial litigator turned stay at home mom-prenuer.
Why law school? [04:55]
Like many lawyers, Nikki didn’t go into law school dreaming of defending the everyday person. Nikki wanted to be an actress! Life made its turns and pivoted her into graduating top of her class in South Florida. After six years as a commercial litigation lawyer, Nikki crawled her way out of law!
Decide what you want [10:20]
One of the hardest things we can do is make everyday decisions. It is even harder when you have to decide what you want. Determining your wants can feel like the biggest bite of life. But it is the best way to beat overwhelm and live the life that you actually deserve. Start small. Take a little bit of time everyday to sit still, listen to yourself, and dream.
Perfectionism [13:39]
Being a perfectionist is not inherently a negative thing! Finding the right times to turn that dial of perfectionism up and down is key, though. There is no such thing as 100%. There are going to be tons of mistakes! When you’re a perfectionist, you fail to see those mistakes as gifts. Recognize when perfect is necessary and when to just get the task done.
But Definitely Wear Mascara [17:50]
Nikki’s latest book is written for mom’s that have a business or purpose in their heart that is separate from their roles as a mom and wife. The short chaptered book reminds you that no matter how crazy life is, always make time to do something that is just for you.
Get off the Hot Mess Express [20:00]
Brain dumps are your best weapons against the hot mess express. If you feel like you’re drowning, you’re probably carrying too much in your mind. Take a moment to write everything that is roaming around in your head. From the meeting you need to prep for to the pictures that still aren’t hung in the hallway. Every single thing. When you’re done, take a step back. What on this list do you need to do? What can be delegated? What can be removed from the list altogether?
Tips for the Overwhelmed Mom [25:14]
Are you taking time for yourself? Be honest with yourself about the time that you have, now. Even if it’s five minutes, take the time and use it on yourself. Silent moments in the car, eating lunch by yourself, or taking a long shower at night. Carve out the time for yourself and guard it like your life depends on it. The people in your life need you to pour into yourself!
